The major areas of study covered include the political and cultural contexts of contemporary First Nations visual art praxis; understandings relating to geographically diverse arts practice; history and politics of appropriation and copyright; discussions of change and continuity; the impact of colonial and neo-colonial ideas of collection, museums and exhibitions on the representation of First Nations cultures and communities. Opportunities exist for students to use FUMA as a research resource, and also to attend exhibitions and meet First Nations artists and curators.

Aims

This topic has three main aims:

  • Introduce students to the strength, complexity, and diversity of contemporary First Nations visual arts in global contexts
  • Familarise students with knowledges and perspectives informed by a range of First Nations visual art practices
  • Assist students in thinking critically about the contributions of First Nations artists, curators, cultural leaders and communities to contemporary society

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Examine contemporary First Nations visual art from cultural, social, historical, and political perspectives

Appreciate the diversity of First Nations visual languages and practices
3.
Assess the impact of colonial and neo-colonial ideas on collecting and representing First Nations cultures and communities
4.
Explain First Nations art in ways that are inclusive, both verbally and in writing
5.
Conduct research that draws on cultural collections and centres First Nations voices
