This topic will address the following:

The investigation process framework - principles of investigation and definitions
Note taking - recording of events featuring in an investigation
Communicating and dealing with witnesses - techniques for interviewing and obtaining statements from witnesses to an incident in accordance with legislative requirements
Management of evidence - collection and handling of information and physical evidence
Communicating and dealing with suspects - techniques for conducting a record of interview with suspected persons in accordance with legislation and procedural fairness
Completing an investigation process - preparation and submission of a brief of evidence
Managing the investigation process - framed around management functions of: Planning, Organising, Leading and Controlling
Expert Investigators - addressing environmental issues such as: water pollution, soil pollution, marine pollution, spills, toxic waste, mining, petro-chemicals, aqua-chemicals, natural resources and coastal protection
Syndicated investigation - developing responses to a range of Special Ideas, presenting same to Panel of Experts and preparing report addressing prosecution recommendations

Aims

This topic aims to outline to students who have an understanding of issues associated with environmental crime:

The standards imposed upon investigators to conduct an investigation in accordance with the principles of procedural fairness
The management of the investigation process
The roles played by the environmental agencies for the environmental issues in South Australia
