As well as gaining an overview of the major debates in the archaeological study of art, students will gain a better understanding of the ways in which archaeological data is used to support various theories. In addition, we hope that students develop a sense of archaeology as a profession, with particular orientations, problems and professional values. We hope they leave the course with some feeling for how archaeologists working in this area think, as well as with the ability to critically assess issues relating to the archaeology of art.

Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Provide an overview of the major forms of archaeological art and their geographic and chronological distribution
  • Address the ability of art studies to document changes in human behaviour, technology, economy and ideology
  • Identify the major techniques used in the archaeological study of art
  • Develop critical responses to theory and evidence
  • Explore the ethical dimensions of studying Indigenous art and other cultural materials
