This topic will provide students with a grounding in the techniques of underwater survey, position fixing, mapping, photography (including video), recording, excavation and conservation. The topic will include content on various research methods and techniques used by maritime archaeologists.

Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to the practice of maritime archaeology
  • Examine some of the maritime archaeological field skills used in the underwater environment as well as in coastal and inter-tidal setting
  • Develop selected maritime archaeological field skills in students
  • Address the methodologies used in underwater and coastal archaeology
  • Develop further students' understanding of maritime archaeology

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Other topic information

While SCUBA diving is not a requirement to undertake this topic students can choose to participate in SCUBA diving as part of the topic. Flinders University has strict requirements for diving and boating safety. Students who choose to participate in SCUBA diving as a minimum, will need to hold a certified open water diving certificate, have logged a minimum of 15 hours, have a current diving medical certificate and have carried out a diving competency test.
