Overview

Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes occurring within and related to living cells and plays an essential role in Medicine, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Environment, Nutrition and Engineering. In this topic students will focus on understanding the chemical basis underpinning biological molecules and processes and their regulation in living cells. Students will gain an in depth understanding of the most important enzymes, transport proteins, metabolic pathways and regulatory mechanisms and understand the implications of perturbations of important pathways and processes. This topic will provide students the opportunity to be a part of next generation of biochemists who will provide solutions to complex biological problems that we currently see.

Aims

This topic aims to develop students' knowledge and understanding of food and energy metabolism and to provide them with opportunities to apply their knowledge and understanding to the solution of 'real-world' problems related to enzyme function, nutritional deficiencies and metabolic disorders.
