Aims

This topic is designed to help students to understand both the theory and practice of investment selection and management. Students will be introduced to the modern portfolio approach to investments, the valuation and analysis of individual securities, and the selection, management and performance evaluation of a portfolio of securities.

The topic concepts will be applied to the Australian investment environment with frequent discussion of Australian institutions, instruments, markets and ethical professional standards. Recent developments in the field i.e. alternative investments, FinTech and ESG will be accounted for in the topic. Students will be encouraged to apply the theory and concepts studied to current market developments. The case study and the portfolio management simulation will require students to analyse and value securities and track portfolio performance. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Evaluate economic, firm and individual investor related information to assess different types of securities
2.
Determine the appropriate trade-off between risk and return for investment vehicles
3.
Appraise modern portfolio theory and critically evaluate different asset pricing models and asset allocation strategies
4.
Argue and justify the rationale behind investing in different alternative investment vehicles
5.
Evaluate the impact of recent developments in portfolio management and ethical standards in practice
