Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop engineering skills in relation to digital game projects
  • Investigate the diversity of users, platforms, technologies and mechanics that define digital game experiences
  • Critique existing digital game experiences across various scenarios from Indie and AAA, to games for purpose
  • Provide appreciation for the ethical and professional issues surrounding the production, publication, distribution and use of digital games

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Justify and implement the application of agile software development principles for production of interactive, digital game experiences
2.
Design and develop functional computer based assets for the purpose of a digital game deliverable
3.
Evaluate the ethics, nature, usage, limitations, and features of existing digital games
4.
Critically evaluate the fields of research related to games, player experience, and purpose
5.
Generate effective team-based workflow and strategies for complex software development in relation to game development

Pre-requisites:

Assumed knowledge

Intermediate level programming, preferably in C#, C++, or Java such as can be obtained in COMP2711 Computer Programming 2. Some experience using 2D or 3D computer graphics APIs such as can be obtained in COMP3751 Interactive Computer Systems or COMP3752 Computer Game Development.
