Aims
- Comprehension and practical referencing to both historical and modern day mass manufacturing techniques
- Comprehension of raw material resource acquisition and processing into modern materials used in mass manufacturing along with the cost associated with such
- Understanding of Environmental concerns of raw material acquisition and processing along with Circular Economy advocacy and recycling challenges within modern manufacturing
- Case Study analysis of a common consumer product and thus advocating improvement in the manufacturing techniques and material choices made
- Sustainable manufacturing applications and TRUE costing analysis: Specifically considering the eventual waste product into the environment and the reduction of such negative environmental effects
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Have knowledge of the historical and current manufacturing methods used in mass manufacture and rapid prototyping activities in consumer product production
2.
Comprehend mass manufacturing techniques, materials and related technologies and the application of this awareness to product analysis
3.
Provide critical analysis of a common consumer product from the perspective of Design Engineering and the decisions made in its manufacture
4.
Apply and analyse Sustainable Product Design Strategies with a specific goal to reduce, reuse and recycle whilst implementing a circular economy approach within mass manufacturing
