Aims

This topic aims to: 
  • Develop pre-service teachers’ understanding of structured literacy practices and how they address equity in literacy education
  • Equip pre-service teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to design and implement evidence-informed literacy instruction that meets the diverse needs of learners
  • Empower pre-service teachers to create literacy environments underpinned by the principles of cognitive science, to promote student voice, choice, and engagement in meaningful learning experiences
  • To cultivate pre-service teachers’ capacity for action research, reflective practice, and ongoing professional growth in literacy instruction, ensuring decisions are informed by contemporary frameworks

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Articulate an understanding of the principles of universal design, explicit direct instruction and multi-tiered systems of support, their application to literacy instruction and how they address the cognitive requirements of reading and writing
2.
Design and justify structured literacy instruction that incorporates the principles of universal design, explicit direct instruction, and multi-tiered systems of support and how they empower students as active participants in their literacy learning, fostering autonomy, ownership, and motivation, addresses diverse learners' needs and promotes equity in access and opportunity
3.
Select and incorporate culturally relevant texts, materials, and experiences into literacy instruction to promote generalisation of learning, while also privileging children and young peoples' identities and backgrounds
4.
Engage in action research, reflection, and plan professional development to refine your literacy instruction and improve children and young people's outcomes, ensuring decisions are informed by evidence-based practices and contemporary frameworks
