Pre-service teachers will engage their developing indigenous pedagogies as they participate in a series of Bush Kindergarten sessions with pre-school children in context. Carrying out an indigenous inquiry into children’s literacy and numeracy learning on Country.

Aims
This topic aims to develop:
- A critical understanding of the issues in, and models of, contemporary Indigenous Australian education and policy
- An awareness of the power relations inherent in the historical constructions of ‘race’, racism, representation and identity and how this impacts on contemporary education policy
- A respect for the histories, cultures and perspectives of Indigenous communities
- Culturally sensitive and inclusive pedagogy demonstrating skills and knowledge in order for them to become an effective teacher of Indigenous children
- An understanding of how to teach Indigenous perspectives, and literacy and numeracy concepts, through outdoor play settings
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
analyse historical race relations in Australia over time
2.
critically reflect on their cultural positioning and perspectives, education and teaching experiences and evaluate how these understandings shape their knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people;
3.
Critically analyse the evidence base and contemporary approaches to evaluating culturally responsive and inclusive practices including reflexive personal learning.
4.
Apply initiative, creativity and critical judgment to the planning and implementation of safe Indigenous teaching practices in outdoor play settings, considering effective teaching strategies for Indigenous Australians.
5.
Apply approaches to teaching literacy and numeracy concepts through Indigenous pedagogies in outdoor environments.
