PSTs will analyse and evaluate a range of contemporary teaching methodologies, resources, and theoretical frameworks, applying them in the design of inclusive, reflective, and culturally responsive pedagogical approaches. This topic emphasises the development of sophisticated practical and research-informed skills necessary for teaching in and through the arts, fostering an expert understanding of the interrelationship between artistic practice, educational theory, and societal impact.  In collaboration with professional artists and educators, PSTs will critically engage with the challenges and opportunities of arts education, culminating in the design and delivery of innovative curriculum plans. This learning process is underpinned by critical inquiry, peer collaboration, and professional reflection, preparing PSTs to assume leadership roles in arts education.

Aims

This topic aims for pre-service teachers to:

  • Develop an advanced and critical understanding of the role of the arts in education, both as a distinct learning area and as a multidisciplinary approach for fostering deep, reflective, and culturally contextualised learning experiences across educational settings. 
  • Critically explore, evaluate, and apply contemporary, research-informed approaches to teaching and learning in and through the arts, with a focus on promoting creativity, innovation, and critical thinking in diverse educational contexts. 
  • Cultivate the capacity to design and implement inclusive, culturally responsive, and pedagogically sound teaching practices, methodologies, and resources, tailored to address complex learning needs and effectively plan for transformative learning experiences in the arts. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Critically apply and evaluate recent advancements in arts education to develop and integrate arts-based pedagogies across disciplines, leveraging artistic practices to promote deep learning, learner engagement, and cross-disciplinary connections

Implement and critically assess embodied learning approaches within and beyond the expressive arts to promote holistic cognitive, emotional, and social development, enhancing engagement and learning outcomes in diverse educational contexts
3.
Critically appraise, select, and implement authentic, research-informed arts resources to design and execute effective, inclusive, and innovative learning plans in and through the arts, addressing diverse learner needs
4.
Engage in rigorous reflective practice to critically examine and refine their own professional development, enhancing their capacity to adapt and lead in dynamic educational environments while addressing evolving educational and societal demands in arts education
