EDUC9145 Inclusive Teaching Practices for Educators

Overview

This topic examines inclusive teaching practices to support diverse children and young people within the same classroom. Pre-service teachers will learn pedagogies that facilitate supporting children and young people with a diverse range of academic abilities and performance. The overarching framework for these instructional methods will be housed under an academic Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Explicit Instruction (EI), and Differentiated Instruction (DI) will be taught as Tier 1 intervention methods. A focus on push-in class support will introduce Systematic Instruction (SI) as an instructional method for children and young people who need additional support within the classroom.

The overarching framework for these instructional methods will be housed under an academic Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

Aims

Develop professional resilience through a focus on personal and social capabilities. Pre-service teacher will be challenged to consider a range of inclusive teaching practices and reflect on their experiences with children and young people to further inform their own teaching.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Analyse current research and legislative requirements to cultivate inclusive classrooms

Apply knowledge of learner diversity to design effective physical, organisational, and instructional structures to foster inclusive practices

Outline Response to Intervention (RtI) procedures to ameliorate learning and behavioural difficulties

Create and enact instructional plans based on research informed and evidence-based practices: Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Differentiated Instruction (DI), Explicit Instruction & Systematic Instruction (SI)
