Aims

This topic is designed to: 

  • Prepare preservice teachers to develop their own and primary aged students understanding and competence with mathematics
  • Interrogate the relevant F-6 curricula in mathematics
  • Develop knowledge about children’s emerging understanding, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning with mathematics and share ways in which children’s thinking and competence can be developed through effective pedagogies
  • Develop preservice teachers who have comprehensive knowledge and skill in teaching, differentiating and adjusting learning in mathematics for all students.
  • Prepare preservice teachers to design and plan effective teaching, learning and assessment in mathematics

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Construct a philosophy of teaching and learning mathematics
2.
Deconstruct and develop their own working knowledge of primary mathematics
3.
Evaluate and select content and teaching, differentiation and assessment strategies for mathematics aligned with relevant curricula of primary school settings
4.
Critique teaching approaches used to develop children’s capacity in primary mathematics
