Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Prepare students who are new to postgraduate study to undertake research and apply knowledge within their fields of study
  • Foster an appreciation of the scholarship of research
  • Support the development of students' as self-directed learners
  • Develop and/or refine students' conceptual and practical skills in:
    • Accessing relevant research-related resources and materials
    • Critical writing and analysis
    • Preparing and delivering effective oral presentations
    • Undertaking a variety of assignment tasks that involve critical evaluation and/or professional application
  • Introduce students to Flinders expectations for undertaking postgraduate study
  • For students from non-English speaking backgrounds, to increase confidence and proficiency in communicating using English in academic contexts

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Access information on Flinders expectations for postgraduate study including policies and procedures and be familiar with sources of support and resources available to them
2.
Reflect critically on relevant research and professional literature
3.
Deliver high quality oral presentations
4.
Prepare scholarly written papers that conform to expected academic conventions
5.
Confidently communicate using English in a variety of academic contexts (speaking, reading, writing, listening)
