Overview

Ecohydrology elucidates the interactive processes on the land surface that involves plants, water, soil and the atmosphere; the influences of these processes on water resources, biomass production, carbon sequestration, and heat balances; and their responses to climate and environmental changes. In this topic, we discuss water storage and flow in … For more content click the Read More button below.

Aims

This topic is to deliver advanced knowledge of energy, water, and carbon fluxes at the land-atmosphere interface, the roles of vegetation and soil, and the relationship with climate.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Describe and model soil composition, texture, and hydraulic properties
2.
Explain water transfer in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, the coupling between transpiration and photosynthesis
3.
Estimate and discuss the relationships between climate (including climate change), vegetation cover, and water balance
4.
Explain land ecosystems and atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide and water
5.
Simulate and discuss water flow, evaporation and root water uptake in soils
6.
Demonstrate advanced problem-solving, critical-thinking and reasoning abilities
