Overview

This topic will develop students’ knowledge about the pathophysiology, exercise testing and medical management of key chronic cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions. Students will apply clinical exercise physiology skills to safely, and effectively, prescribe evidence-based exercise interventions in these cohorts. This topic requires students to complete a clinical placement.

Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Link student's knowledge of the principles of clinical exercise assessment and prescription to the application of exercise in people with cardiometabolic, kidney, and respiratory disease
  • Support students to understand and describe the underlying pathophysiological processes and medical management of patients with cardiometabolic, kidney, and respiratory disease relevant to exercise management
  • Link student's understanding and application of the management and overall rehabilitation of patients with cardiometabolic, kidney, and respiratory disease in a health care setting

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Critically evaluate the professional roles and scope of practice of an accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) in the context of chronic cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions
2.
Apply evidence-based behaviour change strategies to overcome barriers, increase self-management, and improve health and lifestyle outcomes for people with chronic cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions
3.
Quantify physiological, psychological, and biopsychosocial outcomes to inform the development of safe, evidence-based, and person-centered exercise prescription for people with chronic cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions
4.
Design, deliver, and modify evidence-based person-centered exercise interventions that are safe and effective for people with chronic cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions
5.
Display clinical leadership through verbal and written modes for key stakeholders in accordance with legislative and best-practice requirements for people with chronic cardiometabolic and respiratory conditions
