Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Enable a student to develop an understanding of the sustainability challenges and opportunities that urban environments present
  • Emphasise the connection between the global and local patterns of city development and how the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals may help achieve more sustainable urban centres
  • Investigate the extent to which wellbeing "embedded" into the urban fabric and what this means for urban liveability, sustainability and resilience
  • Highlight emerging smarter urban design, development and regeneration practices

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Discuss how the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals relevant to urban centres may be applied to the design and development of cities
2.
Evaluate the efficacy of smart, liveable and resilient urban initiatives
3.
Propose solutions and alternatives to achieve urban sustainability through the application of urban design, planning and policies
