Overview

This topic introduces the theory and methods associated with surveying measurements over relatively small areas of the Earth's surface. Measurements of distance, horizontal and vertical angles together with precise measurements in the vertical plane are considered using differing technologies. Calculations associated with the conversion of measurements to coordinates are explained … For more content click the Read More button below.

Aims

This topic aims to:

Develop an understanding of survey instrument selection for plane surveys,
Collect plane survey measurements and transform them into coordinates, and
Understand errors in plane survey measurements and their adjustments

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Explain the planning, execution and management of plane surveys
2.
Design the appropriate combination of equipment and procedures for data collection that ensures the results meet the quality requirements of relative positioning for a variety of small surveying projects
3.
Predict, analyse and adjust errors in plane surveying measurements
