Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Develop insight and understanding in language issues and debates appearing in the national media
  • Enhance the students' understanding of the similarities among related languages (such as French, Italian and Spanish)
  • Provide an opportunity to develop an understanding of a language other than one's own

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Apply principles of comparative linguistics to the description and classification of languages

Explore languages other than your own and examine their structure and writing systems
3.
Critically discuss and present on current issues and themes in language dynamics, including language diversity, lingua francas, and language policy
4.
Investigate the current state or historical evolution of a language, or group of languages
