Overview

Candidates will conduct a self-contained research project on a specific aspect of the specialty of their interest, embodying original observations made by the candidate, and including a critical review of the literature in the relevant field. The period of research will be of not less than twelve months if undertaken full-time, and not more than four years if undertaken on a part-time basis. The thesis must demonstrate substantial analysis of, and research into, the matter under examination and show a thorough understanding of, and competence in, appropriate research techniques. It must be presented in a form consistent with the University's Rules for Higher Degree Theses.

Aims

The aims of this time-based thesis topic are to support students to develop specialised knowledge and research skills related to the area of their chosen research field. They will acquire the appropriate research skills and training to enable them to work independently and complete a body of research at the level of a Masters by research qualification.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate their capacity to formulate a significant problem and synthesise a complex body of knowledge
2.
Demonstrate their review and application of the literature in writing and orally (where appropriate)
3.
Explain their understanding of chosen methodological practices
4.
Validate research through critical analysis of source material, results of experiments (where appropriate), and published works
5.
Justify and disseminate acquired knowledge and skills through the presentation of well-written work
