Aims
This topic aims to extend the student's ability to effectively communicate health messages to individuals and groups both in verbal and written form and to apply the theory of client centred and self management approaches to nutrition counselling.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Model effective communication and counselling strategies to ensure client-centred and culturally responsive nutrition practice
2.
Conduct a dietetic interview demonstrating a variety of effective communication and counselling skills and ethical behaviour
3.
Formulate effective nutrition education strategies for non-professional audiences using relevant education theories.
4.
Critically reflect on own communication and counselling skills with reference to the National Competency Standards of Dietitians Australia.

Knowledge of basic communication skills such as active listening, different questioning styles, reflecting feelings and content, use of encouragers, non verbal communication and how to build rapport, how to build trust and how to gather information.
