Aims
This topic aims to:
- increase students’ knowledge of grief and loss frameworks and understand the changes over time to these frameworks.
- broaden students’ awareness of the impact of loss and grief on both themselves and patients and families receiving palliative and end-of-life care
- increase students’ ability to effectively care for clients experiencing loss and grief in their workplace, including recognising the need for referral.
- broaden students’ repertoire of self-care strategies in the face of loss and grief
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Explore your personal loss and grief history and determine how this might impact ability to respond effectively to patients/residents experiencing loss and grief
2.
Discuss models and concepts of loss, grief and bereavement and be able to differentiate between adaptive grief and complicated grief
3.
Define types of grief commonly seen in palliative and end-of-life care practice and determine appropriate referral pathways
4.
Recognise cultural differences in relation to attitudes to death and caring for the dying and bereaved and determine appropriate responses
5.
Identify grief issues that are particular to specific groups (children, CALD groups, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, LGBTIQ+)
6.
Critique grief/bereavement strategies utilised in your own work environment and professional practice and determine areas of improvement
7.
Identify self-care strategies to facilitate safe and positive work experience when working with grief and loss in the workplace
