Aims

This topic aims to

  • Describe characteristics of paediatric and neonatal palliative and end-of-life care
  • Examine developmental milestones and the implications for symptom assessment and management 
  • Appraise characteristics of effective communication with children who have a life-limiting illness and their families over the course of the disease trajectory

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Appraise key characteristics of neonatal, paediatric palliative and end-of-life care as it relates to patients, family and health professionals within the context of diseases and illness trajectories
2.
Describe the key characteristics of a specialist paediatric palliative care service and identify factors that influence referral to paediatric palliative care services
3.
Demonstrate knowledge of cognitive, physical and emotional developmental milestones for children of different ages. Apply this knowledge to communication skills required when talking with children, siblings and parents about illness trajectories and dying
4.
Discuss the types and prevalence of symptoms for children with life-limiting illness. Appraise current modes of symptom assessment and management of these diseases
