Aims
This topic aims to facilitate the development of students' knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes regarding aspects of the care of the spirit in palliative care, through both rigorous academic study and reflection on personal and professional understandings and practice.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Discuss spirituality and the way it is expressed. Appraise the literature relating to who cares for the spirit in palliative and end-of-life care.
2.
Evaluate the role of meaning making and human faith in relation to palliative and end-of-life care.
3.
Critique the literature and reflect on personal and professional experiences concerning the concepts and dynamics of wholeness, suffering, hope and transcendence
4.
Reflect on and evaluate the modalities used to care for peoples’ spiritual needs, distinguishing the differences between assessment and discernment. Apply this knowledge in case studies and in online discussions.
5.
Reflect on your own spirituality, knowledge, skills and attitudes, and examine the impact of these on your ability to provide spiritual care for people during palliative and end-of-life care.
