This topic introduces students to the skills required to research and develop non fiction stories for screen. Workshops will focus on concept and story development, structuring and shaping a documentary story or idea, and producing a range of documentation to seek funding or other resources during the pre-production phase.

Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Introduce students to conceiving and developing non-fiction short form stories for the screenProvide students with opportunities to identify and develop research and writing skills and apply them to the documentary form
  • Provide students with an understanding of a range of modes and models and creative treatments within documentary storytelling
  • Enable students to develop and complete professional documentation in order to articulate and promote their idea, for a range of outcomes
  • Provide students with opportunities to evaluate and support the development of the work of their peers. Provide students with the skills to effectively pitch their work in oral and written modes

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Apply knowledge of research and development strategies when writing short non-fiction stories
2.
Further develop research and writing skills for non-fiction screen stories
3.
Develop a synopsis and proposal document and script that has been formatted according to industry standards
4.
Produce persuasive pitches and documentation suitable for funding applications and other purposes
5.
Apply knowledge of film form to convey ideas and meanings via a finished script
