Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Ensure that students have an understanding of typical development across the lifespan, and can apply foundational knowledge and skills to speech pathology practice.
  • Introduce students to anatomy and physiology related to human communication and swallowing
  • Introduce students to phonetics and linguistics with regard to how humans express and understand each other through speech and language.
  • Develop basic skills in scientific inquiry and thinking in speech pathology including evidence-based practice, basic research principles such as observation and scientific reasoning
  • Develop study skills to facilitate independent and life-long learning

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Explain the development and functioning of the anatomical structures required for communication and swallowing

Explain the relationships between receptive and expressive aspects of speech and language in typical development across the lifespan
3.
Demonstrate accurate phonetic transcription for spoken English using the appropriate phonetic framework

Apply critical and scientific inquiry and thinking, to practice in speech pathology
