Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Expand on knowledge of typical and difference patterns of communication and swallowing across the lifespan
  • Expand on the knowledge and practical skills required to conduct evidence-based assessment, analysis, interpretation, planning, and management of complex communication, cognitive and swallowing needs for adults
  • Expand understanding of the factors that contribute to complex difficulties with communication and swallowing across the lifespan
  • Expand application of the principles and strategies for engaging and working effectively with individuals, families, communities and in teams, as well as providing opportunities for high levels of independence with routine practice
  • Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate cultural responsiveness
  • Provide students with opportunities to apply the principles and strategies of ethical practice, professional communication and counselling
  • Continue to develop students’ abilities to reflect on learning, practice, and the transfer of knowledge and skills to develop professional goals

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate evidence-based assessment, interpretation, planning, implementation and monitoring of intervention for individuals, families and communities with complex communication and swallowing needs across the lifespan to a level of readiness to enter the profession
2.
Assess clinical characteristics of speech
3.
Explain the inter-relationships between factors that impact upon communication and swallowing competence across the lifespan
4.
Demonstrate effective teamwork, to facilitate partnerships and engage in ethical and culturally responsive practice at near entry level
5.
Critically reflect on the development of near entry level competencies as they relate to the Professional Standards for Speech Pathologist in Australia
6.
Explain and reflect on the role of basic counselling skills in speech pathology practice
