Aims

This topic aims to develop students' understanding of the following areas to a graduate level:

  • Consolidate students' understanding of the key areas of professional practice as laid down in the Professional Standards for Speech Pathologists in Australia 
  • Consolidate skills and knowledge for making diagnoses and recommending treatments for clients, families and communities with complex communication and swallowing needs
  • Consider these complex communication and swallowing needs in the broader issues of lifespan development and the impact of the social and cultural context on health
  • Consolidate students' knowledge and practical skills in applying evidence-based practice strategies to answering clinical questions

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Accurately assess, interpret and manage complex speech pathology scenarios across the lifespan using enquiry-based learning protocols
2.
Demonstrate decision-making that considers complex psychosocial, ethical and cultural factors in speech pathology practice
3.
Evaluate the effectiveness of assessment and intervention plans and make appropriate modifications as required
4.
Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills in complex contexts
