Aims

To develop a comprehensive understanding of the concepts of emotional well-being, mental health, and mental illness with the purpose of applying appropriate assessment, person-centred care, and the delivery of recovery-focused interventions.  

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Critically analyse the therapeutic use of self and others that promote respect, empathy and therapeutic engagement with people across the lifespan experiencing mental health issues
2.
Critically explore strategies to work with people experiencing mild, moderate and complex mental health care needs within an interprofessional and multidisciplinary team and within the principles of trauma informed care
3.
Critically appraise the elements and significance of a mental state assessment including risk, comorbidity, and substance-related issues, within a strengths-based framework and when working in a range of contexts for the purpose of applying collaborative responses to meet the needs of mental health consumers, carers and families, and communities
4.
Develop a comprehensive understanding of the aetiology of commonly presented mental health conditions and your role in providing person-centred engagement, and collaborative working with consumers and carers to promote a person’s mental health and recovery within a legal and ethical framework
