This topic is based on the presentation and analysis of key national and international issues in criminal justice. It is taught by visiting international scholars and/or current staff. In 2025 this topic will develop students’ policy and advocacy skills. Students will reflect on how the criminal justice system and associated agencies can better promote its fundamental purpose of community safety and how to collaborate with people with lived experience in the justice system.

Aims

This topic aims to develop students’ understanding of the importance of understanding, hearing, and working with previously incarcerated people to develop criminal justice policy and to advocate for change.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Recognise the complex interconnections between marginalisation and crime.
2.
Develop knowledge of a range of criminological perspectives, including convict criminology, queer criminology, etc
3.
Demonstrate effective advocacy skills
