Aims

This topic aims to:

  • Investigate the characteristics of students with complex communication needs and explore considerations for assessment and instruction
  • Prepare preservice teachers in the process of assessing functional communication
  • Develop understanding of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) modes and innovative strategies for teaching and learning
  • Facilitate knowledge and application of innovative communication technologies for diverse learners who have complex communication needs

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Identify the communication characteristics of learners with complex communication needs and their implications for teaching diverse learners
2.
Appraise modes of augmentative and alternative communication and systems including innovative technologies for inclusive education
3.
Analyse assessment data to identify communication goals for teaching
4.
Implement targeted communication programs that reflect contemporary, research‐informed instructional strategies
5.
Develop an implementation plan to teach the use of an augmentative and alternative communication system
