Aims

The aim of this topic is to provide international students with understanding of the Australian Healthcare System and what it means to work in health and aged care service in Australia. Students are expected to undertake practical exercises, to participate in group activities and provide a plan for a professional and personal healthcare development, applied to their own aspirations.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Examine the social, cultural, political, and economic factors in the Australian context and their impacts on the health system
2.
Identify the roles and inter-relationships in the Australian primary, secondary, and tertiary health and aged care sectors
3.
Explain the public and private funding schemes and payment mix for Australian health and aged care services
4.
Examine the practitioner registration, regulation and ethical requirements for different health and aged care roles working in the Australian system, as well as the regulation of medicines and other therapeutic goods in Australia
5.
Analyse the quality and safety regulations, legal, accreditation and maintenance of professional standards requirements, across the Australian health and aged care system
6.
Contextualise patient and consumer journeys across the Australian health and aged care systems for safe, quality, affordable and sustainable care
