This topic aims to:

  • Explore the place of slavery in the United States and analyse the sectional differences between the North and the South
  • Examine the political and social pressures that existed in nineteenth century American society and consider the context in which the Civil War took place
  • Set out the main features and the nature of the Civil War
  • Consider the aftermath of the War, specifically focusing on the issue of race relations and the Reconstruction era
  • Analyse the place of the Civil War in American history and culture
  • Consolidate students' ability to analyse and assess different types of sources
  • Provide a learning context in which students hone their collaboration skills in a mutually respectful atmosphere
  • Further develop students written and communication skills
