Overview

There are many problems across mathematics, science and engineering that can only be solved through the use of complex numbers, while many other problems involving real numbers are easier to solve after introducing complex values. This topic provides a formal introduction to complex numbers and functions of a complex variable, with a focus on extending results from real-valued calculus to complex functions. This includes notions of continuity, differentiation, and integration, and how these can be defined formally in the complex setting. There is an emphasis on both the proof of key results, and how these may be used to solve theoretical and practical problems.
