Aims

The topic aims cover a broad range of essential skills and knowledge areas in medical science. It includes the critical analysis of scientific data from various sources, understanding the impact of scientific advancements on health, and recognizing diverse career opportunities. It also emphasizes the importance of developing an online presence, understanding the evolution of scientific data, and being aware of potential biases in AI-gathered information. Additionally, it highlights the development and protection of intellectual property, the nature of clinical trials and related ethical issues, the importance of quality assurance in diagnostics, and the need for professionalism at all career stages.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Evaluate and discriminate factors that influence opinion (facts vs misinformation) in medical science, regarding human health and disease, current and new technology, the changing environment and the impact to the broader community
2.
Critically assess scientific literature and data from social, professional and alternative news sites to construct an objective analysis. Incorporate an understanding of the importance of quality controls, assurance and the role of professional accreditation, in medical laboratory research and diagnostic laboratories
3.
Enhance teamwork and communication by simplifying scientific content for concise written and oral presentations. Develop professional behaviour essential for career success, including teamwork, respect, time management, punctuality, active listening, reflective practice, effective communication, ethical conduct, and integrity
4.
Increase awareness and ability to appraise diverse career opportunities and the range of roles associated with medical science, including laboratory medicine and clinical trials. Apply skills learned to value and construct a professional profile for career development
5.
Expand social accountability to fortify awareness and the ability to contextualise the influence of medical science on society and various cultures, (including indigenous, national and international), regarding impact on health, wellbeing and the environment
