Aims
The aim of this topic is to:
- provide students with an understanding of pathophysiology, clinical pharmacology and medication administration in midwifery practice
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Explain the pathophysiology of underlying and pregnancy-acquired health conditions
2.
Identify the indications, mechanism of action, contraindications, and side effects of commonly administered medications used to treat pre-existing or pregnancy-acquired conditions
3.
Describe the systemic effects of prescription and over the counter medications on the woman and the developing fetus (including teratogenesis)
4.
Examine the implications of addiction resulting from medication and substance use in pregnancy and the postpartum period
5.
Examine the ethical and legal issues in medication management across the perinatal period
