Overview

This Human Physiology topic is designed to develop students understanding of how the healthy human body functions including the control systems in place to regulate these functions. There are seven organ systems covered which include the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine and reproductive systems. Lectures form the topics’ foundational … For more content click the Read More button below. Physiology can prepare students for wide-ranging careers, and special interest seminars featured in this topic provide insight to how clinicians and clinical researchers use normal human physiology in their specific work contexts.

Aims

This topic aims to further develop students' understanding of the physiological functions of the human body, with a focus on the mechanisms that maintain homeostasis in day-to-day life. Students will explore the roles of major organ systems, including the nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, endocrine, and reproductive systems. In addition to gaining content knowledge, emphasis is placed on developing key skills in acquiring and interpreting physiological data. Students will engage in critical analysis of experimental data and develop their ability to communicate physiological information effectively, preparing them for future research, diagnostic or clinical practice.

Assumed knowledge

Foundational first-year level knowledge of human physiology of the following organ systems: nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, renal system and endocrine system such as can be found in MMED1005 How Your Body Works: Human Physiology and Structure. Concurrent enrolment with first year topics is not recommended.
