MMED3933 Biochemistry of Human Disease

Overview

This topic will build on the foundations of metabolic biochemistry and molecular and cellular biology. The topic takes a disease-orientated approach, emphasising the application of biochemical and molecular biological knowledge to diseases. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the biochemical and molecular basis of diseases arising from altered metabolism including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the signalling pathways and genetic basis of cancer, as well as an understanding of the molecular basis of protein misfolding diseases. Students will apply their knowledge by working in small groups to explore how biochemical principles can be used to understand disease symptoms and progression and how they might be treated or avoided with medicines, diet and lifestyle. This topic will be suitable for students wishing to pursue careers in Medicine, Dietetics and Nutrition, or Biomedical Research.

Aims

This topic aims to develop students' knowledge of human metabolic biochemistry and how cell functions are regulated. This will form the basis to understand the biochemistry of prevalent diseases of metabolism, aberrant cell growth/survival and of protein malfunction or misfolding.
