Overview

Health economics is the study of how society can use limited resources more efficiently to meet health care needs. This topic will introduce students to the foundations of health economics and their use in public health.

Aims

Designed for students who have no previous knowledge of economics, this topic aims to improve students’ understanding of health economics approaches and to show why they are relevant for the study of public health. This topic will equip students with an ability to interpret economic evidence and critically appraise the quality of published economic evaluations. The topic will introduce methodologies of both supply and demand analyses in the healthcare market and demonstrate how health economics analyses can be used to guide clinical guidelines and public policy.
