Aims

This topic aims to prepare students for their first “early practice” clinical placement.

Specific aims of the topic sessions include: gaining knowledge and skills in the use of Electro Physical Agents (EPAs); medical record documentation; clinical reasoning and professional behaviour.

Simulation-based training aims to provide opportunities to refine knowledge and skills and to gain confidence and competence in patient management.

The five week (equivalent) clinical placement encompasses orthopaedic, musculoskeletal and/or cardiorespiratory physiotherapy practice with an emphasis on independence in the management of non-complex components of care and addressing key clinical competencies. Students are expected to manage patients (assess, interpret, plan, implement and evaluate interventions using a demonstrated and sound clinical reasoning process), in collaboration with the patient. Knowledge and skills are consolidated in the clinical placement, providing the opportunity to analyse, evaluate and refine effective physiotherapy skills attained in the course to date.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and skills of clinical practice including use of relevant electrophysical agents, clinical reasoning and documentation
2.
Engage in inclusive, collaborative, consultative, culturally responsive and client centred model of practice
3.
Engage in safe, effective and collaborative interprofessional practice
4.
Demonstrate professional and ethical behaviour including workplace health and safety requirements in a clinical setting in accordance with professional, ethical and legal regulatory standards
5.
Plan and implement safe, efficient, effective, collaborative, culturally responsive, evidence based physiotherapy assessments and interventions with clients
6.
Review the continuation of physiotherapy using relevant outcome measures with the aim of facilitating the client's optimal participation in everyday life
7.
Demonstrate clear, accurate, effective oral and written communication skills to support the development of trust and rapport in professional relationships with the client and relevant others complying with professional and health site requirements
8.
Demonstrate proactive and constructive management of actual/potential conflict
9.
Access, gather, interpret and apply information to continuously improve practice and demonstrate the ability to reflect on own practice
10.
Recognise clinical situations that are outside their scope of competence and then seek appropriate support in a timely manner
11.
Recognise the need for, and implement, appropriate educational strategies to empower and collaboratively manage clients' health
