Overview
This topic covers the functional anatomy of the head, brain, neck and thorax. Specifically this topic will cover embryology and the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory systems. The role of this anatomy and physiology in the production of communication and swallowing is emphasised.

Aims
This topic aims to introduce students to:
- The anatomy and physiology of the head, neck and brain
- The anatomy and physiology of the body systems that relate to communication and swallowing
- How pathological processes contribute to communication and swallowing impairments
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Explain the anatomical human development (including embryology and genetics), specifically the development of the head, neck and brain
2.
Identify and explain the head, neck and brain structures and their function as they relate to communication and swallowing
3.
Explain relevant risk factors and pathological processes related to anatomy and physiology and describe how these influence communication and swallowing
