Aims
This topic aims to:
- Facilitate students’ understanding of the current knowledge, theories, methodology and research in the area of communication disorders and needs in children and adolescents in both Australian and international contexts
- Introduce students to a psycholinguistic and sociological perspectives for understanding speech, language and literacy development, disorders and needs to guide assessment and intervention
- Facilitate students’ understanding of client, family and community-centred approaches to working with families and other professionals
- Facilitate students’ understanding of holistic child focussed communication assessment incorporating formal and informal methods
- Develop students’ understanding of an evidence-based approach to evaluating approaches to service delivery and intervention for developmental communication needs and/or disorders
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:

Identify factors that impact communication development and competence in children and adolescents.
2.
Integrate information and demonstrate clinical reasoning for children with communication needs
3.
Describe holistic evidence-based implementation approaches in intervention for children and adolescents with communication needs
4.
Explain the impact of communication delay/disorder on academic achievement, social and personal development and future work participation
5.
Describe the interpersonal communication skills that facilitate collaborative learning

Assumed knowledge
Foundation knowledge of linguistics, phonetics, psychology, anatomy and physiology, research methods at first year undergraduate level. As well as SPTH2901 Professional Studies and Communication Sciences 1A: Communication Development & Disorders: Birth to Pre-School.
