Aims
This topic aims to:
- Develop knowledge and practical skills required to conduct assessment, make a differential diagnosis, and determine the management of individuals with acquired language disorders, primarily aphasia
- Develop knowledge of complex communication and feeding disorders in children and develop practical observation, analysis and evaluation skills to assess young children and plan appropriate management in partnership with families and other professional groups
- Develop understanding of the principles of and strategies for counselling clients and their families/carers
Learning outcomes
On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Assess, analyse, and report findings from assessment of complex communication, cognition and swallowing/feeding in infants/children
2.
Assess, analyse, and report findings from assessment of language/communication in adults
3.
Report on the impact of complex communication impairment in children and adults and/or feeding/mealtime issues for infants/children on an individual’s life participation and psychosocial well-being
4.
Formulate and justify a client-centred treatment plan for children with complex communication needs and/or feeding/swallowing disorders; and adults with acquired language disorders.
5.
Select and implement evidence-based strategies and resources to manage children with complex communication needs and/or feeding/swallowing disorders.
6.
Apply the principles of effective therapeutic communication and basic counselling in their speech pathology practice
7.
Reflect on their own emotional responses to clients with complex and/or diverse needs and identify appropriate self-care strategies
