Aims

The topic aims to produce graduates that:

  • Can distinguish between approaches that support mental health versus those that only address mental illness
  • Have developed a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing that is shaped by both person factors (e.g. biology, genetics, habits, thinking, needs), and environmental factors (e.g. workplace demands or resources, social interactions, systems, culture)
  • Can examine core physiological processes like stress and examine how these processes impact on our thinking, emotions, behaviour and social responses
  • Learn and practice in-the-moment strategies to support mental health and well-being in your workplace or community

Learning outcomes

On completion of this topic you will be expected to be able to:
1.
Illustrate the differences between various models of wellbeing and differentiate approaches that support mental health and wellbeing, versus those that only address mental illness
2.
Analyse how both person factors and environmental factors interact to impact on mental health and well-being in workplace or community scenarios
3.
Explain some of the reactions (emotions and behaviours) of others who are dealing with difficult circumstances drawing on knowledge of both person and environment factors that impact on mental health and wellbeing
4.
Apply simple in-the-moment strategies to support mental health and well-being in example workplace or community scenarios
