Aims
The teaching major aims to:
- Establish knowledge of historical and contemporary events and developments in Indigenous Studies
- Introduce students to a range of secondary and primary readings, ranging from written texts and visuals, connected to Australian Indigenous Studies
- Develop the skills to think critically and evaluate ideas in connection with events, developments, debates and historiographies of Australian Indigenous Studies
- Develop both written and oral communication skills in relation to Indigenous Studies
- Develop the ability to work in groups and as individuals to meet deadlines in class and on assessments in connection with Indigenous Studies
- Encourage students to connect across boundaries and value ethical behaviour through a cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary understanding of Indigenous cultures and Australian society
- Produce graduates with a critical understanding of the various ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identities are formed and represented within Australia
Learning outcomes
On completion students will be able to:
1.
Demonstrate a critical and comparative knowledge and understanding of a variety of events and developments important to Indigenous Studies in Australia, including the application of ‘race’ and the issues surround reconciliation, and the contribution of indigenous people in Australia to life and culture
2.
Analyse a range of secondary reading, assessing the value of this material in terms of argument and research, and how Australian indigenous people view their own history and culture
3.
Analyse a wide range of primary sources, texts and visuals, and determine their contexts and value
4.
Develop the ability to use content knowledge to plan, analyse, think critically, reflect upon and evaluate ideas, options and decisions and be able to convey and communicate these
5.
Demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues related to the field of Indigenous Studies and especially the viewpoint of Indigenous peoples
6.
Apply effective oral and written communication skills so as to write and present properly structured, clearly argued, fluently expressed essays and oral presentations across a variety of genres, from research, argumentative and reflective communications
7.
Exchange and debate ideas with other members of the class and with the tutor with the utmost integrity and respect
8.
Work regularly, independently and collaboratively to meet the prescribed deadlines and activities
