Aims

The minor aims to:

  • Enhance pre‐service teachers’ confidence and capacity to teach within Science learning area for Early and Primary Years
  • Develop deep knowledge of science concepts, inquiry skills and processes of exploring and experimenting bravely
  • Inspire a pre‐service teachers’ curiosity of the world by designing and critiquing science curriculum, resources, pedagogies and
    assessment practices
  • Channel a curiosity about the natural and built world through a balance of inquiry, play and intentional experiments

Learning outcomes

On completion students will be able to:
1.
Assess scientific concepts and knowledge through inquiry practices to develop a deep scientific knowledge base
2.
Evaluate contributions of science to culture, society, and our economy to understand how it influences our lives in the past and present
3.
Explore ways to prepare children for transitions and continuity of learning through creative and curious investigations into the natural and built world
4.
Critique science curriculum programs, resources, pedagogies, learning activities and assessment practices including recording and reporting strategies
5.
Design high quality safe science education opportunities across ages and abilities with other learning areas to capitalise on a range of teaching practices including play, inquiry, problem‐based and project‐based learning experiences, which use a range of materials and equipment
6.
Discuss theoretical and research‐based curriculum and pedagogies with peers while confidently expressing their scientific identity and enthusiasm for science teaching
7.
Critically assess and plan for opportunities to develop professional knowledge in science education to improve pre‐service teachers’ teaching impact on children’s learning in science
