Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Health Administration requires 1 year of full-time study (or the equivalent part-time). The course is offered by the College of Business, Government and Law.

The course articulates with the 18 unit Graduate Certificate in Health Administration and the 54 unit Master of Health Administration, and the sequentially developed topics enable progression through the awards.

The course is also available as an exit award from Master of Health Administration, subject to meeting the requirements of the Program of Study below. In order to be able to exit with the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration students must indicate their intention to not to proceed with their degree and request that they exit with the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration.

Program of study overview

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Health Administration, a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below.

Not all topics are necessarily available each year.

Upon completion of 18 units a student may choose to exit with Graduate Certificate in Health Administration or the Graduate Certificate in Aged Care Administration, subject to meeting the program of study for that award.

Program of study notes

This Program of Study serves as a suggested study plan. When core topics are offered in both halves of the year, students may enrol in these topics in either half of the year as long as requisites are met.
The introductory core topics HACM9100, HACM9101 and HACM9102 should normally be completed prior to other core and option topics.
With the permission of the Course Coordinator an alternate option topic that is appropriate to the student's program of study may be substituted.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements

Applicants must:

Normally hold a degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution and have not less than two years professional experience in the health or aged care sector following completion of the degree or equivalent qualification

Hold the Graduate Certificate in Health Administration or equivalent from Flinders University

However, the Dean (Education) may, under certain circumstances and subject to specific conditions, admit others who can show evidence of fitness for candidature.

Aims

The course is designed to enhance the competencies of health and aged care managers by building on their current workplace experience and promoting the application of management theories to existing problems. This is accomplished by utilising the expertise of our teaching staff (who are also experienced managers) and of health and aged care leaders in both the public and private sectors who lecture in the program.

The course prepares graduates for entry to the Australasian College of Health Service Management and assists medical practitioners to enter the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators.

Apply knowledge of management methods to your practice in managing people and resources

Use critical analysis and available evidence to address problems and opportunities in health and aged care policy and practice

Negotiate ethical and practice dilemmas and apply your skills and knowledge to achieving better outcomes for communities, clients and staff

Provide leadership within your work role, and enhance your career

Student progression rules

One or more of the following may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress:

Failure to complete the course full-time within two consecutive semesters or part-time within eight consecutive semesters
The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion
The award of a grade of Fail (F) in 9 units or more
