Aims

The overall aim of the course is to prepare students for professional practice as occupational therapists. Graduates will be flexible, innovative, creative, reflective, and responsive critical thinkers and practitioners, able to adapt and respond to changing industry needs. They will critically consider the knowledge and evidence base underpinning practice to ensure high quality clinical reasoning and delivery of professional and ethical occupational therapy practice suited to context and need.  Graduates will be able to work across a range of practice settings.

The course aims have been developed to ensure that graduates meet the Entry-Level Competency Standards for Occupational Therapy.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Apply clinical reasoning and principles of professional and ethical practice as an occupational therapist.
2.
Promote health and participation for clients of occupational therapy through engagement in meaningful occupation
3.
Provide safe, inclusive and high-quality care in a culturally responsive manner.
4.
Collaborate effectively with clients, key stakeholders, and allied health professionals.
5.
Reflect critically on practice to enhance decision-making, support client outcomes, and adapt to evolving practices and environments.

Student progression rules

Students achieving a GPA of at least 5 at the end of third year will be eligible to continue into the fourth year of the course. Students who do not meet the GPA requirement will be able to exit with the Bachelor of Health Sciences on completion of 108 units according to the first three years of study in the degree.

The award of a grade of Fail (F) in the same topic on more than one occasion or failure to complete the course within eight consecutive years may constitute prima facie evidence of unsatisfactory progress for the purposes of the University's Policy on Student Progress.

Except with the permission of the Dean (Education), a student may not proceed to higher year core topics unless they have satisfactorily completed the previous year's core topics.
