This course provides students with the skills required of an entry level lawyer.
Competence in these skills is required for admission as a legal practitioner.
The course is taught by Leo Cussen Centre for Law over 5 rotations:
- Induction
- Transactions (Commercial and Corporate Practice and Property Practice)

- Disputes (Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution)

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, a student must complete 36 units with a grade of P or NGP or better in each topic, according to the program of study below, and have also completed the requirements of one of the following courses (including where part of an associated combined degree):
- BLLAW Bachelor of Laws
- BLLAWH Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
Not all topics are necessarily available each year.
Early entry to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is available to students meeting the admission requirements listed below. Early entry will require students to be concurrently enrolled in 9 units of their undergraduate degree, and 36 units of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
The following courses enable early entry to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, for a student enrolled as per the standard study plan.

The following courses may enable early entry to the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, if a student enrols in a deviated study plan, such as semester overload and/or enrolling in Summer topics. Students are recommended to seek study plan advice.

This Program of Study serves as a suggested study plan. When core topics are offered in both halves of the year, students may enrol in these topics in either half of the year as long as requisites are met.

Admission requirements
Applicants may commence the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice only after:
- they have successfully completed an approved degree with Flinders University, which fulfils the academic requirements for admission in South Australia as set out in the Rules of the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council 2018 (normally, Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Laws (Honours))
OR
- they have successfully completed all core Law topics that will lead to the completion and award of an approved degree with Flinders University, which fulfils the academic requirements for admission in South Australia as set out in the Rules of the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council 2018 (normally, Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Laws (Honours)); and
- they have no more than 9 units remaining to complete that approved Bachelor degree; and
- they are enrolled in those 9 units while they are undertaking their Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice studies.
The University will confirm the eligibility of students who have not yet completed their Bachelor of Laws degree.
NOTE:
1. A student permitted to enrol concurrently in the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and the final period of study of an undergraduate degree (normally, Bachelor of Laws or Bachelor of Laws (Honours)) will not be awarded the Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice until the undergraduate degree is completed.
Aims
The course will:
- Satisfy the practical requirements for admission to the legal profession under the Rules of the Legal Practitioners Education and Admission Council 2018
- Enable students to apply their theoretical understanding of the law to practical situations
- Equip students with the skills required to practice as a legal practitioner
