Program of study

Aims

The course specialisation provides a strong foundation in medical sciences and visual function that prepares graduates with knowledge and skills to follow a career within a research area related to visual function. The course specialisation does not allow registration as an optometrist but provides training in imaging of the eye and a broad understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of the visual system that may be applied to careers within the medical sciences.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course you will be able to:

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the fundamental science underpinning the fields of medical science and your science discipline and have a range of transferable professional skills
2.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the factors that influence sight and the visual system
3.
Demonstrate an understanding of the development and underlying physiology of the visual system
4.
Critically appraise scientific literature and evidence for clinical practice
5.
Develop competence in using ophthalmic instruments
6.
Appreciate the cross-disciplinary nature of the medical sciences and work, as appropriate, with other health professionals
7.
Communicate clearly and effectively with patients and other health professionals
